Cellulite Treatment Introduction

cellulite goal

While cellulite may seem like just a few skin dimples, it is actually a very complex condition involving the texture of fat and skin and it has remained elusive to effective treatments. The promise to make cellulite disappear continues to drive patients to seek cosmetic procedures as it is not well tolerated by the women who have it on their thighs and buttocks. It is estimated that at least 80-90 percent of women have some degree of cellulite and thousands of dollars have been spent on lotions, creams, and pills that herald the magic potion to get rid of this unsightly condition. In the past, cellulite had been thought of as a simple increase of fat in subcutaneous tissue, however, we know that liposuction alone does not resolve cellulite. Cellulite is not only present in those who are overweight but many very thin women have cellulite including many supermodels, famous actresses, and sports superstars.

What is EPAT®?

EPAT® is “extracorporeal pulse activation technology”. It is an FDA cleared device that is non-invasive and uses high energy acoustic waves that are delivered to the tissues being treated in the form of high frequency oscillations. Acoustic pressure waves have been used in medicine for years to break up kidney stones and to treat muscular pain. This technology was being used to treat acute musculoskeletal injuries in a nationally recognized female sports team when the athletes noticed that the cellulite on the treated thigh improved compared to the side not being treated. This led to the initial study of cellulite treatment with acoustic waves.

How Does Cellulite Treatment Work?

EPAT® works on all five layers of tissue that contribute to cellulite: the muscle, the lymphatic system, the connective tissue, the fatty layer, and the skin. Thick, fibrous bands of tissue connect your skin to the underlying muscle after passing through several other tissue layers with compartments of fat cells lying between these tissue bands. When the fat cells between the fibrous bands of tissue increase in size, the fat compartments expand beyond the borders of the bands and bulge producing the dimpling appearance on the skin’s surface. This dimpling is often referred to as an “orange peel” appearance since it resembles the look of the outside layer of an orange. Many factors contribute to the connective tissue disorder (cellulite) such as genetics, hormones, aging, pregnancy, and lifestyle. These factors contribute to weakening of the collagen fibers, decreased skin elasticity, and decreased thickness and tone of the connective tissue layers. EPAT® improves muscle tone, improves circulation and lymphatic drainage, it stimulates and increases collagen formation, it stimulates the breakdown of fat, and tightens the overlying skin to improve the contour. While regular exercise and a healthy diet does not necessarily reverse or prevent the development of cellulite, once your results are achieved, these measures will help keep your results long-lasting
