Juvederm Voluma® Introduction

As you age, it’s not just about lines and wrinkles. Your cheeks can lose volume and skin may begin to sag. Juvederm Voluma® is the first and only FDA-approved injectable gel to instantly add volume to your cheek area to correct age-related volume loss in adults. It can provide you contour and a subtle lift for up to two years with optimal treatment.

Juvederm Voluma® is a smooth consistency, synthetic gel made of hyaluronic acid-a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps to add volume and hydration. In fact, studies show preferred results of Juvederm Voluma® compared to a collagen-based dermal filler. In addition, Juvederm Voluma® injectable gel is the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler that is proven to be safe and effective for persons of color.

How Does Juvederm Voluma® Work?

Juvederm Voluma® injectable gel is a nonsurgical, physician-administered treatment.

How Juvederm Voluma Works

Juvederm Voluma® is eased under the skin using a fine needle to augment, or fill, the soft tissue of the dermis-the dense inner layer of skin beneath the epidermis-to add volume and diminish wrinkles and folds. Juvederm Voluma® injectable gel is used most effectively for those wrinkles and folds in the lower third of your face, like your “laugh lines”, “smile lines” or “parentheses” (nasolabial folds), or “marionette lines” (oral commissures).
Juvederm Voluma® is a “next-generation” filler. It is made from hyaluronic acid-a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps to hydrate and add volume. Hyaluronic acid may diminish with age, contributing to the formation of wrinkles and folds. Juvederm Voluma® injectable gel works to correct this by restoring hyaluronic acid in your skin, helping to smooth wrinkles and folds.

Use of MicroCannulas for Injection of Fillers and Collagen Stimulators

Until the past few years, facial wrinkles and depressions were primarily treated using superficial fillers injected under the skin using sharp needles. Today, we are more focused on restoring facial volume and youthful contours by using more robust fillers and collagen stimulators. We are placing these products using a deeper volumizing approach. The goal is to restore the natural features of face, without the “overdone” appearance that that overfilling of nasolabial folds that makes the face look and doesn’t result in a more youthful face. Look at the face before and after nasolabial folds and ask yourself Yes, the nasolabial folds are not as deep as they were before treatment but looking at the patient’s overall appearance “does the face look younger”. If you cannot say “yes” to that question, then you are not seeing the results of an artistic injector. The face must be looked at and evaluated as a whole and then each area should be assessed. This
assessment considers the overall facial appearance, the areas of irregular contours, the areas of volume loss, the sagging areas, the depressed areas, and the wrinkles.

Microcannulas

Since we are now restoring the contours all over the face and treating the face as a whole, multiple injections and entry points through the skin with a sharp needle is not practical and is not ideal. By using cannulas, each area is treated from a single insertion sight. Depending on the degree of correction needed, the complete face can be treated with only a few insertion sites on each side of the face. These cannulas have a blunt tip and are flexible so can be moved over curves of the face. The face is numbed with topical cream, a tiny needle is used to place a small whelp of numbing medicine just under the skin, an opening the size of the cannula is made using a standard needle, then the cannula is passed through this entry point, and the cannula can be passed in multiple directions so that the entire face can be filled through only a few entry points. The use of cannulas decrease the risk of hematomas and decrease the discomfort with injections. In most cases, there is virtually no bruising. MicroCannulas can be used to fill the face, the neck, the chest, and the hands for both men and women.

Juvederm Voluma® Before and After

What to Expect

Before you go: We recommend that you avoid any medications that can prolong bleeding, such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS), for at least a week prior to treatment in order to reduce the risk of bruising and bleeding at the injection site.

When you arrive: If this is your first visit, our staff will ask about your medical history, including any allergies you may have or medications you may take, and will tell you more about wrinkle treatment with Juvederm Voluma®. We do not require an allergy test for this procedure.

Before the procedure: Although anesthesia is not required, our staff may use topical or injectable anesthesia to numb the treatment area first.

Procedure: Our staff will ease the injection into your skin to augment, or fill, wrinkles and folds. Following the injection, our staff may gently massage the treated areas. The procedure is quick and easy. The injection itself usually takes only about 15 minutes.

Seeing results: You should see an immediate improvement in the treatment areas. Most patients need one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing, and the results last up to 6 months or more. However, results may vary and correction is temporary. Supplemental “touch up” treatments may be required to achieve and maintain optimal results.

Juvederm Voluma® FAQs

What is Juvederm Voluma®?

Juvederm Voluma® is a gel that is injected into the cheek area to gently lift the skin and restore volume that is lost from aging. It is made from a modified form of hyaluronic acid which is a natural complex sugar that occurs within our bodies.
In addition, Juvederm Voluma® is the only FDA approved cosmetic filler that lasts for 12 months! It is the preferred cosmetic filler used for volumizing and correcting deep folds such as nasolabial folds (The “smile lines” between the nose and corner of your mouth).

How long does it last?

Up to two years with optimal correction.  There is evidence that hyaluronic acid fillers actually help to stimulate the production of new collagen by your own body so that longer duration of improvement may be seen.  Also depending on various factors of your health, weight and body chemistry as well as the volume injected and the skill of the injector duration of correction may be shorter (or even longer) than 2 years.

What are the different types of wrinkles?

There are two different types of wrinkles:
– Dynamic wrinkles are caused when muscles contract to make facial expressions such as smiles and frowns.
– Static wrinkles develop because our skin’s natural substances (such as collagen and hyaluronic acid), which provide structure and volume, decrease over time.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found on your skin. As you age, you start to lose hyaluronic acid, which causes the skin to lose structure and volume, contributing to the formation of wrinkles and folds.

Do the injections hurt?

We use a great topical numbing agent will be used to minimize discomfort. This is a major advantage of having a cosmetic surgeon provide your treatment. Also, Dr. Tuesday only uses Juvederm Ultra XC® or Juvederm Ultra Plus XC®; both products contain lidocaine (numbing medication) already in the solution. It is highly recommended that patients stop taking all anti-inflammatory medications and aspirin 7-10 days prior to treatment to reduce swelling and bruising.

How long is the treatment?

It usually takes 45 minutes for a Juvederm Voluma® appointment. Your first appointment may take a little longer, but subsequent appointments can be completed in about 30 minutes.

Can it be used for lip enhancement?

Yes! We often recommend Juvederm Voluma® for lips for patients who want a fuller lip. Another option for those desiring fuller lips is lip augmentation with the PermaLip which is permanent. However, it is very easily reversible should you change your mind in the future.
