Juvederm Ultra® Introduction
As you age, it’s not just about lines and wrinkles. Your cheeks can lose volume and skin may begin to sag. Juvederm Ultra® is the first and only FDA-approved injectable gel to instantly add volume to your cheek area to correct age-related volume loss in adults over the age of 21. It can provide you contour and a subtle lift for up to two years with optimal treatment.
Juvederm Ultra® is hyaluronic acid, which is a complex sugar that is identical to the hyaluronic acid your body naturally makes. Because the Juvederm Ultra is identical to the hyaluronic acid in your own body, it breaks down naturally.
How Does Juvederm Ultra® Work?
When Juvederm Ultra® is injected below the skin, it lifts wrinkles, depressions, or scars so that they are level to the surrounding skin. Ultimately smoothing and evening out the your skin.
Juvederm Ultra® can be used anywhere in the face, but it is best suited for superficial wrinkles and depressed scars. The ideal locations for Juvederm Ultra® are the wrinkles between the eyebrows (glabella), upper and lower lip (smokers lines or lipstick lines), hollow grooves under the eyes (tear trough deformities), and any depressed scars on the face. During your consultation the best filler for your specific concern will be determined.
Use of MicroCannulas for Injection of Fillers and Collagen Stimulators
Until the past few years, facial wrinkles and depressions were primarily treated using superficial fillers injected under the skin using sharp needles. Today, we are more focused on restoring facial volume and youthful contours by using more robust fillers and collagen stimulators. We are placing these products using a deeper volumizing approach. The goal is to restore the natural features of face, without the “overdone” appearance that that overfilling of nasolabial folds that makes the face look and doesn’t result in a more youthful face. Look at the face before and after nasolabial folds and ask yourself Yes, the nasolabial folds are not as deep as they were before treatment but looking at the patient’s overall appearance “does the face look younger”. If you cannot say “yes” to that question, then you are not seeing the results of an artistic injector. The face must be looked at and evaluated as a whole and then each area should be assessed. This
assessment considers the overall facial appearance, the areas of irregular contours, the areas of volume loss, the sagging areas, the depressed areas, and the wrinkles.
Since we are now restoring the contours all over the face and treating the face as a whole, multiple injections and entry points through the skin with a sharp needle is not practical and is not ideal. By using cannulas, each area is treated from a single insertion sight. Depending on the degree of correction needed, the complete face can be treated with only a few insertion sites on each side of the face. These cannulas have a blunt tip and are flexible so can be moved over curves of the face. The face is numbed with topical cream, a tiny needle is used to place a small whelp of numbing medicine just under the skin, an opening the size of the cannula is made using a standard needle, then the cannula is passed through this entry point, and the cannula can be passed in multiple directions so that the entire face can be filled through only a few entry points. The use of cannulas decrease the risk of hematomas and decrease the discomfort with injections. In most cases, there is virtually no bruising. MicroCannulas can be used to fill the face, the neck, the chest, and the hands for both men and women.
What to Expect
– Local numbing medication may be used to maximize your comfort during the procedure. Most patients report a mild discomfort typically associated with needle injections.
– You may experience a mild to moderate amount of stinging or aching sensation post injection.
– To ensure an even correction our staff will massage the area treated, which may cause a temporary, minimal to moderate amount of redness to your skin.
– Bruising at the site of injection is a commonly reported side effect. To minimize bruising, inform your provider if you use blood thinners such as ibuprofen, aspirin (NSAIDs) or herbal preparations prior to your procedure.
– Temporary minimal to moderate swelling can be expected, which should dissipate following injection. Some patients report dramatic reduction in swelling hours after their treatment.
– It is normal to experience some tenderness at the treatment site for a few days.
Juvederm Ultra® FAQs
Does Juvederm Ultra® work instantly?
Yes! It works instantly to lift wrinkles, depressions, and scars, and to restore the volume lost during the aging process.
How long does Juvederm Ultra® last?
The duration of Juvederm Ultra® varies for each patient and procedure:
1. The closer you inject Juvederm Ultra® to the mouth, the faster the it breaks down.
2. The more superficial you inject it the longer it lasts.
3. There are no guarantees of duration. During the consultation, we will give you general guidelines or ranges for the duration for your specific application.
Is there downtime?
Immediately after the injection, there may be some mild redness and swelling. This usually goes away after one day.
How many visits are necessary?
Unless you have had injectable fillers before and know exactly what you want, a consultation is necessary to discuss your concerns and educate you about your treatment options. Once the appropriate injectable filler has been determined based on your expectations, a treatment date will be set. The injection may take anywhere from 15 to 60 minutes, depending on the area and amount to be injected. There is usually a follow up appointment 10 to 14 days after the injection.
What is the level of discomfort during injections?
There is very little discomfort during the injection. A topical numbing medication can be applied to the area before the injection if you are concerned about injection pain, however, most people do not require this. In addition, there is a numbing medication mixed into the Juvederm Ultra®, so the injection itself makes you temporarily numb.
Can it be used for lip enhancement?
Yes! We often recommend Juvederm Voluma® for lips for patients who want a fuller lip. Another option for those desiring fuller lips is lip augmentation with the PermaLip which is permanent. However, it is very easily reversible should you change your mind in the future.
