THE NON-SURGICAL DOUBLE CHIN REDUCTION
Kybella® is designed specifically to treat the dreaded double chin. Traditionally we used surgery to treat this area.
We understand that many factors out of your control, such as aging and genetics, and these can cause a double chin. Exercise alone isn’t making the double chin any better. Before
Kybella® was approved, the only good treatment option was surgical liposuction. Now, we finally have a noninvasive method with minimal side effects and little down time.
How Does Kybella® Work?
Kybella® is deoxycholic acid (a molecule that occurs naturally in the body) that is injected into the excess fatty tissue in the submental area. It is a “fat melter” and causes destruction of the fat cells. After treatment and during the healing process, your body’s own immune cells and natural metabolic processes clear these broken down fat cells from the area. When injected properly, it targets fat cells only and causes their destruction; all other tissue and cells remain unaffected. It works for mild, moderate and even severe cases of excess fat under the chin and in the upper, midline of the neck. It is not a treatment for excess fat in the sides of the neck or for the jowls. It is also not a treatment to address excess neck skin (although we have heard patients claim they think it noticeably tightened their skin). Most patients will require two or three treatments spaced 4 weeks apart; you may require more depending on the amount of fat you have in the submental area. For the right patient, this is an excellent trade off to avoid surgery.
Kybella® Before and After
What to Expect
During your initial appointment for a Kybella®, we will meet and determine if treatment with Kybella® will meet your aesthetic goals, and if you are a good candidate for such a treatment. If so, we will go through a thorough history and physical examination, and discuss with you all of the different considerations that relate to treatment with Kybella®, including the schedule of injections, since Kybella® is usually not a single injection treatment.
The treatment itself is remarkably quick and easy to do, and recovery and downtime is minimal. You will experience mild discomfort and a little numbness during treatment. For a few days following the injection you will experience tingling and achy feeling. It’s a great option for patients looking to improve the appearance of their neck, chin and jawline without resorting to surgery.
How long does it last?
Kybella® causes the destruction of fat cells, when injected into the fat under your chin. Once the cells are destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. Your improvements should be permanent as long as your weight remains stable
Is it safe?
The safety profile of Kybella® is well characterized. The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of hardness around the treatment area. Kybella® can cause serious side effects, including trouble swallowing and nerve injury in the jaw that can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness. There are no allergic reactions since this substance naturally occurs in your body.
What's the downtime?
You can resume your normal activities immediately after your Kybella® treatment. Patients describe a bit of an “achy” feeling and mild tenderness that is well controlled with a dose of Tylenol or Ibuprofen. The neck skin over the treated area may stay slightly pink and a little swollen for several days. The area can be a bit firm to touch for a few weeks which is the natural process that occurs when the fat cells are broken down and your body works to carry away those cell remnants. It is possible to have a little bruising; as with any injectable procedure avoiding ibuprofen and aspirin for a couple of weeks before your treatment is recommended.
Will it work for me?
Anyone over 18, in good health with moderate-to-severe submental fat can reap the benefits of this aesthetic treatment. If your chin has a twin, and you’d like to improve its appearance without the risk of surgery – you’re the perfect choice for this exciting new procedure.
How many treatments will I need?
We will customize your Kybella® treatment regimen, including how many treatments you need, based on your desired chin profile. Many patients experience visible results in 2-4 treatment sessions, 1-2 vials per treatment. During these sessions, your HCP will administer Kybella® into the fat under your chin using multiple injections. Up to 6 treatment sessions may be administered spaced no less than one month apart.
