Microdermabrasion is an exfoliating treatment that removes the outermost, superficial layer of skin by applying a gentle “abrasion” to the dry, damaged, dead layer of skin and then vacuums away these exfoliated skin cells. This process cleanses the skin and pores of impurities, leaves a smoother texture, and restores a more healthy outer skin layer. Because microdermabrasion is a gentle “exfoliating” process, this procedure would probably be better described as “micro-exfoliation”. Repeated micro-exfoliation improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by increasing circulation and stimulating collagen. It can be used alone, or in combination with other treatments.
What to Expect
Prior to beginning, the treatment area will be cleansed and prepped; the diamond tip wand will then be manually passed over your skin. This procedure takes about 30 minutes, involves no discomfort and actually feels like a nice facial massage. After your treatment, soothing and appropriate hydrating skincare products will be selected and applied to the area treated. Your skin will appear more vibrant and healthy and have a softer, smoother appearance.
Post Procedure: Although it is unusual, you may have mild redness for up to a few hours. You will need to avoid direct sun light and use good quality sun screen since your skin has temporarily lost its natural protection due to the removal of the scaly, dull external skin layer. This is a true lunch time procedure and you may return to your scheduled activities immediately after the procedure.
Microdermabrasion Before and After
Is there a difference in Microdermabrasion systems offered for treatment?
Yes. The first microdermabrasion systems and many that are currently in use incorporate “crystals” that treat the skin with “particle exfoliation”. These “crystals” can cause superficial scratches and mild burns in the skin which increases the risk of skin irregularities and post procedure hyperpigmentation. In our office, your skin care specialist will use a crystal free Diamond-Tome Wand which is the most effective technology for micro-exfoliation compared to crystals. With this system, the exfoliation is achieved using a hand piece that has natural diamond chips on the tip. All microdermabrasion machines are not created equally. An experienced, trained skin care specialist is allowed to treat using the most effective technology; in a spa setting, crystal microdermabrasion systems are typically used. While these feel nice and relaxing, they provide a more superficial treatment and are less effective.
Who is a good candidate for Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion can be performed on males and females of any age and any skin type. It offers benefits to anyone who wants to improve the overall health and appearance of their skin. It helps improve the effectiveness of your daily home skin care regimen by keeping the skin well exfoliated so that the products are better able to penetrate through the skin and provide their benefits. Microdermabrasion is a great option for those patients who have no downtime available. It is also a great choice for those who have allergies or very sensitive skin and may not be candidates for other procedures, such as chemical peels. It can help the appearance of scars after several treatments. In addition to rejuvenation of overall skin health, microdermabrasion is helpful for sun damaged skin, age spots, pigmentation, reduction of scars, including acne scars, and extraction of blackheads and whiteheads.
What areas of the body can be treated?
Microdermabrasion has multiple diamond tip wands to choose from that allows it to be used on the body as well as the face. Microdermabrasion is most frequently performed on the face, neck, and chest. This is a really popular treatment for Keratosis Pilaris which is red, bumpy skin commonly found on back of the upper arms. *
How long do the results last?
The results from a micro-exfoliation will last for several weeks. Your skin will always be better than it was before treatment plus it helps increase the effectiveness of your home care products which keeps your skin looking its best. Optimal improvement is seen when micro-exfoliation is performed on a regular basis. It is an inexpensive treatment so patients typically enjoy having treatments initially monthly then every other month.
