Neck Liposuction Introduction
The best option for unwanted neck fat may be removal with tumescent liposuction with or without laser assistance. This is an in-office procedure that is done with local anesthetic and can be done with no sedation at all but for most cases a light, sedative to provide relaxation and reduce anxiety is provided with a medication taken by mouth. (Light oral sedation is used to make the injection of the fluid comfortable). A dilute lidocaine solution is slowly and gently instilled into the fatty layer through tiny needle holes in the skin. By using microcannulas, which range in size from a coffee stirrer to a thermometer, the procedure is gentle and less traumatic to the fatty layer of tissue, there is less post procedure discomfort and the result is a very smooth neck and jawline. In addition, the tiny channels created by the crisscrossing pattern of the microcannulas collapse evenly allowing the skin to contract and drape well after the procedure. The best results are achieved in those with good skin tone of the neck.
What to Expect
For most patients, neck liposuction is a fairly quick procedure, and many times it can be performed using local anesthesia. Through 1 or 2 tiny incisions, concealed beneath the chin or behind the ears, a cosmetic surgeon insert a small liposuction cannula, removing excess fat and sculpting a natural contour to the chin and neck. Following the procedure, patients typically wear a special supportive chin strap for about 3 or 4 days, return to work within 1 week, and be ready to return to full activity after about 2 weeks. It is typical to experience some swelling and bruising after neck liposuction; this should resolve during the first 10 to 14 days after surgery.
Considerations for neck liposuction:
Improves the appearance of a “double chin” or fullness underneath the chin
Refines the jawline to enhance the chin or bring balance to facial features
Patients with good skin tone will typically see the best results
Can be combined with chin augmentation or rhinoplasty to further enhance facial contours
Results are permanent so long as a patient maintains a stable weight

Neck Liposuction FAQs
What should I expect after liposuction of my double chin?
Our patients typically have very little bruising after liposuction of the neck. After the procedure, a pressure dressing is worn covering your chin, neck, and head to provide mild compression to the neck tissues for a few days to help the skin re-drape to the new contour of the neck. Most patients only require Tylenol or Ibuprofen after neck liposuction. Fat cells removed by liposuction do not come back. The most remarkable aspect of this procedure is the amount of improvement that can be achieved with such tiny incisions.
Is Neck Liposuction painful?
During the two days immediately after liposuction, the amount of pain experienced depends on the type of anesthesia used for liposuction. Soreness is usually the most intense 2 to 4 days after liposuction and then decreases steadily. The tenderness and soreness typically is quite bothersome for up to 4 weeks, but gradually subsides over the following next 4 to 8 weeks.
How does Neck Liposuction affect the appearance of the skin?
The appearance of skin after liposuction depends on the skin’s elasticity. Skin with good elasticity should look smooth and natural after liposuction. Scars are not a common problem with modern liposuction which uses very small cannulas (microcannulas) and thus only very small incision are required.
What are the risks?
The most dangerous aspect of liposuction is an attitude that ignores the risk of doing too much liposuction on a single day, or disregards the risks of doing multiple unrelated surgical procedures on the same day that liposuction surgery is performed. As judged by current worldwide experience, liposuction is amazingly safe. Rare problems that can potentially occur with any surgical procedure include infections, bleeding, skin ulcerations, and nerve injury.
What treatment is best if I have excess neck fat and excess skin?
If you are have both excess fat and excess skin, a combination of noninvasive procedures would provide the ideal treatment. The neck fat can be treated with liposuction or Kybella®. While those two treatments may tighten the neck skin a bit, we now have noninvasive technology that targets collagen in the dermis of the skin with heat. *
